Her wisdom, experience, and natural sense of humor help us all navigate the complexity of working with young readers and writers. During my tenure as principal at Sterling School, Dr. Katie Kelly has been an extraordinary partner, supporting our teachers and students through thoughtful, research-based literacy work that is both practical and deeply impactful. She is highly responsive and supportive, and most importantly, deeply like-minded in her belief that the most meaningful professional learning comes from deliberate, intentional, and connected collaboration. These carefully designed opportunities have consistently produced our most impactful and lasting moments of growth for both teachers and students.

Through coaching, modeling, and collaborative planning, Dr. Kelly strengthened writing instruction across classrooms and helped teachers refine high impact practices that directly benefit students. Her leadership of our writing workshop professional development series elevated instructional coherence and teacher confidence, while her district level Read to Succeed course, taught onsite at Sterling, further reinforced a culture of strong, responsive literacy instruction.

Her collaborative research partnerships and inclusion of Sterling educators and students in her professional writing have amplified effective practices beyond our school walls while honoring the voices of those closest to the work. These partnerships intentionally bridge theory and practice, bringing teachers, students, and preservice educators together in authentic classroom contexts. Grounded in trust, shared purpose, and deep respect for educators, Dr. Kelly’s work reflects a commitment to equity and excellence and a genuine belief in the power of literacy to transform lives, strengthening schools in ways that are both meaningful and lasting.

"Katie Kelly's expertise, warmth, and deep understanding of literacy instruction were evident from the very beginning. Katie skillfully modeled how intentional conversations can move students beyond surface-level responses and into more thoughtful, reflective engagement with texts. She balanced research-based practices with practical classroom strategies, making it easy for educators to envision how to implement these ideas with their own students.

The session was both inspiring and energizing. Katie’s passion for empowering students as thinkers and communicators was contagious; participants left feeling excited and equipped to return to their classrooms and immediately begin digging deeper with their students. Her ability to connect with educators, honor their work, and at the same time challenge them to raise the level of discourse in their classrooms made this presentation truly stand out.

I highly recommend Katie Kelly as a speaker and professional learning facilitator. Her knowledge, clarity, and commitment to meaningful literacy instruction make her an invaluable resource for any conference, school, or district seeking to strengthen students’ critical thinking and comprehension through conversation."

"Dr. Kelly provided excellent professional development for our teachers.  She was integral in planning for professional development, tailored to our needs, and implementing the transfer of teacher learning into classroom instruction.  Her sessions were valuable and provided staff with a strong framework for literacy instruction, and most importantly, contributed to a culture of readers and writers in our school."

"I have had the pleasure of working with Katie in our district over many years. She has provided professional learning for literacy instruction, coached in individual schools, and worked on curriculum development. Teachers and leaders enjoy Katie's sessions and can't wait for more. She provides a well thought out PD based upon research but seeped in classroom practice for all levels of learners. She has also provided individual schools with coaching support around their literacy needs. The teachers and school leaders have grown as literacy practitioners under Katie's guide."
